Winner Code Bavaria Hackathon

Hacking for Climate Change

Last weekend, I participated with a team of friends at the online hackathon #FutureTech4Climate. This hackathon was organised by the Bavarian ministry for Digital Affairs with the motivation to tackle one of the biggest issues of our time - climate change.

With the current pandemic and the lockdown light in Germany, this was obviously an online hackathon. As at that moment in timer per regulation, 2 households were allowed to meet, that’s what we did for our team (one of my teammates was my housemate). A weekend of coffee, beer, shisha and coding :)

On Supercomputers, data and sensors

We tackled the challenge posed by the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre. The basic idea of the challenge was how data can be utilized in super computing centers to reduce energy consumption. Supercomputing centers gather tons of sensor data and are used by researchers. At the same time they consumer considerable amounts of energy. With our approach greencrease.ai we wanted to tackle the green energy gap production using super computers. You can see the concept in our pitch video.

We were really excited that our project greencrease.ai won the prize in the category “largest environmental impact” at the Bayerische Digitalgipfel CODE BAVARIA awarded by the minister of digital affairs Judith Gerlach, MdL. Also in turn, the LRZ invited us to a tour to visit their super computing center - we are excited :)

Thanks to the Coaches and the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum for posing an exciting challenge in the area of super computers. Kudos to this amazing and fun team that brought a weekend of endless laughters: Thien, Duc and Moritz.
